Tracing water through a ceiling

Stains show where the water arrives, rarely where it starts.

Castle Hill 2154 · 25 March 2026

In short: An investigation in Sydney's north followed water through a bedroom ceiling, mould on a staircase and damage in a downstairs bathroom.

Start with the pattern

Where staining appears, how far it spreads and whether it changes after rain all help separate a roof leak from a plumbing leak.

Look above the stain

Roof penetrations, box gutters and flashings directly above or upslope of the stain are the first suspects.

Readings across the area

A moisture meter maps the wet zone. A thermal camera can show where to take readings.

Mould as evidence

Mould on a ceiling or stair tells you moisture has been there for a while, not just after the last storm.

The report

It sets out the likely source, the evidence for it and what should be opened or repaired next.
